Irwinconsult provided engineering consultancy for Melbourne Grammar School’s Geoff Handbury Science and Technology Hub – a cutting-edge education facility featuring teaching laboratories, materials workshops and an accessible rooftop education area. With 5050sqm of floor space, the hub centres around a four-storey atrium designed to provide optimum indoor environment quality and new facilities including open learning spaces rather than rigid classrooms, informal learning areas, and quiet study zones.
Using a host of innovative platforms we provided structural, civil, building services and EDS to achieve the architectural intent. This included a Bubbledeck slab system to achieve the desired clean and exposed slab soffits of constant thickness and allowed a reduced slab weight to conventional flat plate slab design. The curved profile façade required complex steel framing hung from the roof to support the façade and concrete link bridges to achieve the architects intent. Curved internal steel stairs required detailed 3D analysis of geometry to determine the most efficient profile of stair elements. Updated facilities also provide an improved, low energy building.
