Arts West is the first new building for The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Arts in 50 years, providing a purpose-built facility to accompany contemporary methods of learning and teaching. Through a number of specially designed spaces including object based learning laboratories, integrated displays and digital studios, an immersive and fun learning experience has been created.

The award winning, signature building is built over seven levels on Professors Walk opposite the heritage Old Arts Faculty Building. It includes 5,150 sqm of refurbished building area and provides 3,400 sqm of new building area with a unique facade that represents images from the University’s rich Cultural Collections. The developments’ structure was designed to span over an existing basement plant room and a 500 seat lecture theatre which already sat on the chosen site. This required massive steel transfer beams and 22 metre spanning floors – the longest spanning floors Irwinconsult had designed to date.
