Melissa Pleaner
Position: Design Engineer
Joined Irwinconsult: 2006
As a member of the environmental team Melissa currently provides advice on BCA Section J compliance and carries out daylight and dynamic thermal modelling.
"I have found the relaxed friendly atmosphere at Irwinconsult encourages everyone to continuously learn and grow professionally and personally. Everyone within the organisation has been approachable and willing to assist in design issues / decisions that have arisen along the way. Having the opportunity to work cross-discipline (Mechanical and ESD) allows for an integrated approach to design resulting in more environmentally sustainable designs to be built."
Damien Dingli
Position: Trainee Draftsperson
Joined Irwinconsult: January 2008
Education: Advanced Dip. of Civil Engineering (Structural Design) - currently studying part time
"After working for over 10 years as a furniture maker I decided it was time for a career / lifestyle change. I began studying part time for a career in the engineering field and after a couple of years of study, it was suggested to me by an employee of Irwinconsult that I apply for a position. After having an interview the day after my partner and I came home from hospital with our new baby, I have not looked back. For me, Irwinconsult has been a fantastic entry into such a large field. There is a huge depth of knowledge in the company, and the people are more than willing to help out whenever you need it. This is especially true for me as I am still studying- it is almost like having a full time tutor. It is also good to be working with the most up to date software in the industry. The working environment is quite relaxed and the company encourages a social atmosphere."
Peter Ryan
Position: Graduate Engineer
Joined Irwinconsult: 2007
Peter was a summer vacation student with Irwinconsult at the beginning of 2007 before starting as a graduate structural engineer in January 2008. He is currently working in the Irwinconsult design office for the New Royal Children's Hospital.
"It's a fantastic experience working on such a large project. It has been rewarding working on the design of the foundations and other vertical elements as the building rapidly progresses. I have also found it interesting to witness the interaction of various disciplines when dealing with a building of this scale."
Peter also manages to balance his work life with other pursuits such as kayaking and singing in the Channel 7 series Battle of the Choirs!
Deniz Ibrahim
Position: Design Engineer
Joined Irwinconsult: 2007
"I was initially drawn to Irwinconsult by the company's expertise in the field of structural engineering and their involvement in high-profile design projects. Since beginning as a graduate engineer, I have been involved in a diverse range of projects including the new Moonee Ponds Shopping Centre Project and Yarra's Edge Housing Development in Docklands. The large variety of work which I have been exposed to has enabled me to further develop the foundations learnt in university.
With a strong support network and mentoring system in place for graduates, from day one I was given the guidance and direction needed to complete tasks and further develop both my technical and interpersonal skills. The company has also supported and assisted me in obtaining my CPEng through Engineers Australia.
I've found the work environment at Irwinconsult to be very social, with most lunch times either spent at the pool table with colleagues or at the gym in the office complex. The company social club which I am an active member of also holds monthly activities which have recently included movie nights and a hot dog day."
