This new facility is designed to provide the latest in complex high technology multi-disciplinary care for children including same day and ambulatory care services. The design aims to create a healing environment that accommodates family support. The $1 billion hospital redevelopment is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

The new hospital is being delivered as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) under the Victorian Government's Partnerships Victoria model. Irwinconsult provided structural and civil engineering design throughout the bid phase and are now engaged in the detailed design program which will see the new hospital completed by December 2011.

Founded in 1871, The Alfred is Victoria's oldest hospital operating on its original site. Today, The Alfred enjoys a reputation as one of the world's leading health care providers - largely attributable to its concentration on specialist "high tech" services including Cardiovascular Medicine, Heart-Lung Transplant, Trauma Care, Oncology and Respiratory Medicine. It has been recognised as a pacesetter in the national medical arena and has consistently been linked to progressive developments in acute care, medical research and health care teaching.

The Stage 1 project consists of a three storey structure, future proofed, to enable vertical extension to eight levels over the whole site. Stage 2, the vertical and horizontal expansion commenced on site in April 2008.


Epworth Eastern Hospital, Box Hill

Epworth Eastern is a major private hospital development of 21,000 m², comprising 3 levels of basement car parking for 280 cars, 6 levels above ground accommodating 204 beds and 8 operating theatres. The new facility is integrated with existing consulting suites in the adjoining Box Hill Gardens Medical Centre and connected to the adjacent Box Hill Public Hospital with a pedestrian air-bridge across Arnold Street.

Irwinconsult achieved minimal downtime for the existing radiotherapy services by planning the design and implementation of the new construction with minimal disruption.

 

Geelong Hospital, Cancer Services, Geelong

Barwon Health serves a population of 220,000 for acute health care and provides specialist services, including cardiac surgery, radiation oncology, pathology and palliative care. The Andrew Love Cancer Centre at Geelong Hospital is the only radiation therapy service outside Melbourne and the facility services more than 1600 new patients every year. To ease this demand, this new facility includes two new radiotherapy bunkers, new radiation oncology and medical oncology facilities, new consulting rooms and research offices.


Grace Mckellar Centre Redevelopment, North Geelong

Based on 25 hectares in North Geelong is the Grace McKellar Centre. The centre provides residential aged care and sub-acute rehabilitation and geriatric services, including inpatient, outpatient and home-based services. Irwinconsult provided building services design and environmental design for the 100-bed facility.

Goulburn Valley Health is based in Shepparton and is the Hume Region's designated Regional Referral Hospital servicing a population of 160 000. The new facility incorporates three wings which house the Pathways Home Program, Dental Health Services, entry and commercial precinct and Emergency Department.

While this project was a relatively straight forward design from an engineering perspective, careful attention was given to addressing ESD design concerns and the constraints of working in and around an operational hospital. Our solutions utilised the available local resources to deliver the project on time and on budget.
