Irwinconsult provided structural/civil engineering and ESD consultancy services for the new $50M Peninsula Aquatic and Recreation Centre (PARC). Funded by Council in partnership with both the State and Federal Government, the health, fitness, wellness and recreational facility sets a new benchmark for industry best practice in ESD.
Frankston City Council engaged our team from project inception to develop a detailed ESD brief for the project. The approach to brief was performance targets rather than the traditional general ESD preferences or a list of preferred ESD initiatives. In addition to encouraging innovation, this approach allowed the design team to focus on tangible outcomes.
Amongst a total of 58 implemented, some of the major ESD initiatives included:
- Low carbon energy cogeneration system – 2x65kW gas fired turbines generating electricity on-site while utilising waste heat for heating pool water.
- Bauer HVAC Optimising System reducing fan energy consumption by >30% while providing excellent indoor air quality and reduced pool water evaporation.
- HVAC waste heat recovery to pool water.
- 400,000 litre rainwater tank for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation and a provision for future supply to pool.
PARC is highly energy and water efficient to aid council’s target of carbon neutrality and reduced water footprint. It provides a healthier indoor environment for occupants and staff and is on track to achieve all 9 ESD performance targets.
